Entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint-hearted. It takes a rock-solid mindset and the ability to navigate through challenges and obstacles. A lot of hair and beauty Bosses struggle to achieve their goals and keep playing small, due to limiting beliefs that hold them back from taking risks and pursuing their goals.

These pesky beliefs are often deeply ingrained, feeling almost automatic or beyond your control. So I wanted to explore the importance of challenging your limiting beliefs as a beauty entrepreneur and share some strategies that can help you when you’re feeling stuck.

So what exactly are limiting beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are negative thoughts and assumptions that we hold about ourselves and the world around us. They can be formed through past experiences, handed down from your caregivers, culture, media and societal norms. These beliefs can restrict your potential and prevent you from taking risks and pursuing your goals - pretty much the opposite of what you want as a biz owner!

Common limiting beliefs among entrepreneurs include:
  • I am not experienced enough to charge what I’d like to
  • The hair and beauty industry is saturated and highly competitive
  • I’m no good at the business side of things
  • I struggle with tech/numbers

Challenging these beliefs can be the key to unlocking your potential and achieving success.

Why are limiting beliefs harmful in business?

They can lead to self-doubt, fear of failure, and a lack of confidence in your abilities. This can prevent you from taking risks and pursuing your goals, and exploring opportunities. By challenging your limiting beliefs, you’ll be much more likely to reach your potential and grow the kind of business you deserve.

How to challenge your limiting beliefs:

1. Identify them

Before you can challenge your limiting beliefs, you need to identify them. Take some time to reflect on your thoughts and assumptions about yourself and your business. They usually sound like an 'inner critic', and say things that are in opposition to what you'd truly love to do.
Write down any beliefs that you think may be holding you back. This can help you gain a better understanding of your thought patterns and identify areas that need to be worked on.

2. Question your beliefs

I like to refer to this as, ‘calling myself out on my own BS’. Ask yourself why you believe these things and where these beliefs come from. Challenge the validity of your beliefs and consider whether they are based on facts or assumptions. This can help you gain a more objective perspective and identify areas where you may be limiting yourself unnecessarily. Write down any hard facts that oppose or challenge these limiting beliefs.

3. Reframe your beliefs

Once you have questioned your limiting beliefs, reframe them in a more positive and empowering way. Instead of focusing on what you can't do, focus on what you can do. For example, instead of saying "I don't have enough experience," reframe it to "I am constantly learning and growing." This can help you shift your mindset and focus on your strengths rather than your limitations.

4. Take action

The most important step in challenging your limiting beliefs is to take action. Use your new beliefs to guide your decisions and actions. When you catch yourself thinking of these limiting beliefs, quickly question and reframe them. And don’t forget to celebrate your successes along the way! This can help you build confidence and momentum as you work towards achieving your goals.

5. Seek support

Finally, don't be afraid to seek support. Talk to other Bosses or a business coach about your limiting beliefs and strategies for overcoming them. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, and can offer encouragement and support. This can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals.

Challenging your limiting beliefs is an essential part of the entrepreneurial journey. By identifying and questioning your negative thoughts and assumptions, you can overcome self-doubt and achieve your full potential. Reframing your beliefs, taking action, and seeking support can help you build confidence and momentum towards your goals. Remember, oftentimes the only thing holding you back is your own beliefs. By challenging your own BS, you can unlock your full potential and achieve success as an entrepreneur.
